RESUMO

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) heterostructure is receiving considerable attention due to its novel electronic, optoelectronic, and spintronic devices with design-oriented and functional features. However, direct design and synthesis of high-quality TMDC/MnTe heterostructures remain difficult, which severely impede further investigations of semiconductor/magnetic semiconductor devices. Herein, the synthesis of high-quality vertically stacked WS2/MnTe heterostructures is realized via a two-step chemical vapor deposition method. Raman, photoluminescence, and scanning transmission electron microscopy characterizations reveal the high-quality and atomically sharp interfaces of the WS2/MnTe heterostructure. WS2/MnTe-based van der Waals field effect transistors demonstrate high rectification behavior with rectification ratio up to 106, as well as a typical p-n electrical transport characteristic. Notably, the fabricated WS2/MnTe photodetector exhibits sensitive and broadband photoresponse ranging from UV to NIR with a maximum responsivity of 1.2 × 103 A/W, a high external quantum efficiency of 2.7 × 105%, and fast photoresponse time of ∼50 ms. Moreover, WS2/MnTe heterostructure photodetectors possess a broadband image sensing capability at room temperature, suggesting potential applications in next-generation high-performance and broadband image sensing photodetectors.

RESUMO

Secondary development is a key biological characteristic of woody plants and the basis of wood formation. Exogenous nitrogen can affect the secondary growth of poplar, and some regulatory mechanisms have been found in the secondary xylem. However, the effect of nitrogen on cambium has not been reported. Herein, we investigated the effects of different nitrogen concentrations on cambium development using combined transcriptome and metabolome analysis. The results show that, compared with 1 mM NH4NO3 (M), the layers of hybrid poplar cambium cells decreased under the 0.15 mM NH4NO3 (L) and 0.3 mM NH4NO3 (LM) treatments. However, there was no difference in the layers of hybrid poplar cambium cells under the 3 mM NH4NO3 (HM) and 5 mM NH4NO3 (H) treatments. Totals of 2365, 824, 649 and 398 DEGs were identified in the M versus (vs.) L, M vs. LM, M vs. HM and M vs. H groups, respectively. Expression profile analysis of the DEGs showed that exogenous nitrogen affected the gene expression involved in plant hormone signal transduction, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, the starch and sucrose metabolism pathway and the ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis pathway. In M vs. L, M vs. LM, M vs. HM and M vs. H, differential metabolites were enriched in flavonoids, lignans, coumarins and saccharides. The combined analysis of the transcriptome and metabolome showed that some genes and metabolites in plant hormone signal transduction, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis and starch and sucrose metabolism pathways may be involved in nitrogen regulation in cambium development, whose functions need to be verified. In this study, from the point of view that nitrogen influences cambium development to regulate wood formation, the network analysis of the transcriptome and metabolomics of cambium under different nitrogen supply levels was studied for the first time, revealing the potential regulatory and metabolic mechanisms involved in this process and providing new insights into the effects of nitrogen on wood development.

RESUMO

Exogenous nitrogen and carbon can affect plant cell walls, which are composed of structural carbon. Sucrose synthase (SUS), invertase (INV), hexokinase (HXK), phosphoglucomutase (PGM), and UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (UGP) are the key enzymes of sucrose metabolism involved in cell wall synthesis. To understand whether these genes are regulated by carbon and nitrogen to participate in structural carbon biosynthesis, we performed genome-wide identification, analyzed their expression patterns under different carbon and nitrogen treatments, and conducted preliminary functional verification. Different concentrations of nitrogen and carbon were applied to poplar (Populus trichocarpa Torr. and Gray), which caused changes in cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose contents. In poplar, 6 SUSs, 20 INVs, 6 HXKs, 4 PGMs, and 2 UGPs were identified. Moreover, the physicochemical properties, collinearity, and tissue specificity were analyzed. The correlation analysis showed that the expression levels of PtrSUS3/5, PtrNINV1/2/3/5/12, PtrCWINV3, PtrVINV2, PtrHXK5/6, PtrPGM1/2, and PtrUGP1 were positively correlated with the cellulose content. Meanwhile, the knockout of PtrNINV12 significantly reduced the cellulose content. This study could lay the foundation for revealing the functions of SUSs, INVs, HXKs, PGMs, and UGPs, which affected structural carbon synthesis regulated by nitrogen and carbon, proving that PtrNINV12 is involved in cell wall synthesis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Previous studies have shown that hyperferritinemia is a common phenomenon in non-alcoholic fatty liver dis- ease patients. We aim to further explore the relationship between serum ferritin levels and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease using a meta-analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four Library databases were electronically searched from inception until December 2021 to find prospective cohort or case-control studies examining the relationship between serum ferritin levels and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and all kinds of literature were screened according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The odds ratio and other related data were extracted, and a meta-analysis was performed. RESULTS: Eleven studies examining the relationship between serum ferritin levels and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease were included. The serum ferritin levels in the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease group were significantly higher than those without non-alcoholic fatty liver disease group (1.54 ng/mL, 95% CI: 0.85-2.23, P < .001). Serum ferritin levels were significantly associated with the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in both men and women (odds ratio = 2.36, 95% CI: 1.41-3.93, P = .001 and odds ratio = 2.93, 95% CI: 1.83-4.69, P < .001, respectively), and after adjusting for the parameters, the relationships were still shown to be significant in men and women (odds ratio = 2.24, 95% CI: 1.64-3.05, P < .001 and odds ratio = 3.30, 95% CI: 2.13-5.11, P < .001, respectively). CONCLUSION: Serum ferritin levels were higher in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease than in those without non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and were associated with the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in both men and women.

RESUMO

2D materials with low symmetry are explored in recent years because of their anisotropic advantage in polarization-sensitive photodetection. Herein the controllably grown hexagonal magnetic semiconducting α-MnTe nanoribbons are reported with a highly anisotropic (100) surface and their high sensitivity to polarization in a broadband photodetection, whereas the hexagonal structure is highly symmetric. The outstanding photoresponse of α-MnTe nanoribbons occurs in a broadband range from ultraviolet (UV, 360 nm) to near infrared (NIR, 914 nm) with short response times of 46 ms (rise) and 37 ms (fall), excellent environmental stability, and repeatability. Furthermore, due to highly anisotropic (100) surface, the α-MnTe nanoribbons as photodetector exhibit attractive sensitivity to polarization and high dichroic ratios of up to 2.8 under light illumination of UV-to-NIR wavelengths. These results demonstrate that 2D magnetic semiconducting α-MnTe nanoribbons provide a promising platform to design the next-generation polarization-sensitive photodetectors in a broadband range.

RESUMO

Objective: To explore the relationship between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: A total of 1168 patients with T2DM were divided into the non-CKD and CKD groups, and the difference in the prevalence of NAFLD was compared. The differences in serum creatinine (SCr) and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) levels were compared between the non-NAFLD and NAFLD groups. Patients with T2DM were divided into three groups according to their UACR levels (UACR < 30 mg/g [U1 group]; UACR ≤ 30 mg/g to < 300 mg/g [U2 group]; and UACR ≥ 300 mg/g [U3 group]) or estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) levels (≥ 90 mL/min [G1 group]; eGFR ≤ 60 mL/min to < 90 mL/min [G2 group]; and eGFR < 60 mL/min (G3 group]). The difference in the prevalence and risks of NAFLD in the different UACR or eGFR level groups was analyzed. Results: The prevalence of NAFLD in the CKD group was higher than that in the non-CKD group (63.5% vs 50.5%, p < 0.001). The SCr and UACR levels in the NAFLD group were higher than those in the non-NAFLD group (both p<0.05). The prevalence of NAFLD in the U3 group (75.6%) was higher than that in the U1 (50.5%, p < 0.05) and U2 (60.1%, p < 0.05) groups, and the prevalence of NAFLD in the U2 group (60.1%) was higher than that in the U1 group (50.5%, p < 0.05). The risk of NAFLD in the U3 group was higher than that in the U2 group (odds ratio [OR] = 3.032 and 1.473). Despite adjusting the parameters further, the NAFLD risk in the U3 group remained higher than that in the U2 group (OR = 1.660 and 2.342). Conclusion: The risk of NAFLD in patients with T2DM is closely related to CKD.

RESUMO

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are an alternative to chemical insecticides or fertilizers, and there is an urgent need to extend the application of AM fungi to woody plants. This study aims to investigate the growth and resistance against the gypsy moth larvae (Lymantria dispar) in Glomus intraradices-colonized Populus alba × P. berolinensis seedlings, and to unravel the transcriptome and metabolome phenotypes recruited by AM fungus colonization that affect plant growth and insect resistance. Our results showed a positive mycorrhizal growth response, i.e., growth and biomass of mycorrhizal seedlings were enhanced. However, AM fungus inoculation reduced the resistance of poplar to gypsy moth larvae, as evidenced by the decreased carbon/nitrogen ratio in leaves, as well as the increased larval growth and shortened larval developmental duration. Transcriptome analysis revealed that in both auxin and gibberellin signaling transductions, all nodes were responsive to AM symbiosis and most differentially expressed genes belonging to effectors were up-regulated in mycorrhizal seedlings. Furthermore, the two key enzymes (4-coumarate-CoA ligase and trans-cinnamate 4-monooxygenase) involved in the synthesis of p-Coumaroyl-CoA, an initial metabolite in flavonoid biosynthesis and the first rate-limiting enzyme (chalcone synthase) in flavonoid biosynthesis, were down-regulated at the transcriptional level. Consistent with the transcriptome results, metabolome analysis found that the amounts of all differentially accumulated flavonoid compounds (e.g., catechin and quercetin) identified in mycorrhizal seedlings were decreased. Taken together, these findings highlight the diverse outcomes of AM fungi-host plant-insect interaction and reveal the regulatory network of the positive mycorrhizal growth response and mycorrhizal-induced reduction of insect resistance in poplar.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have shown the correlations between serum ferritin and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or diabetes. However, this relationship remains unclear in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) with NAFLD. Therefore, this study aimed to elaborate the relationship between serum ferritin levels and NAFLD in middle-aged and older patients with T2DM and further explored the biomarkers for NAFLD in T2DM. METHODS: A total of 805 middle-aged and older patients with T2DM were divided into NAFLD and non-NAFLD groups, and their serum ferritin levels were compared. Next, NAFLD group were divided into five subgroups according to the quintile levels of serum ferritin, and the differences in the constituent ratios of NAFLD were analyzed. A logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the risk factors for NAFLD in patients with T2DM. RESULTS: The serum ferritin levels were significantly higher in T2DM patients with NAFLD (168.47 (103.78, 248.00) ng/mL) than in the non-NAFLD patients (121.19 (76.97, 208.39) ng/mL). The constituent ratios of NAFLD were significantly higher in the F5 and F4 groups than in the F2 or F1 groups (22.70 and 22.70% vs. 15.90 and 16.90%, respectively; P < 0.05). Binary logistic regression analysis showed that serum ferritin (P = 0.001) was an independent risk factor for NAFLD in patients with T2DM. CONCLUSIONS: Serum ferritin levels were significantly increased in T2DM with NAFLD, and the constituent ratios of NAFLD increased gradually along with the increased levels of serum ferritin. Thus, serum ferritin is an independent risk factor for NAFLD in patients with T2DM.

RESUMO

During recent decades, the southern and eastern regions of Asia have experienced high levels of atmospheric N deposition. Excess N deposition is predicted to influence tree growth and species composition in the regions, but visual or physiological assessments alone are not sufficient to determine the real effects of atmospheric N deposition. In this study, we simulated atmospheric wet deposition of inorganic N by spraying a NO3- solution (20 mmol⋅L-1) or a mixture of NO3- (20 mmol⋅L-1) plus NO2- (100 or 300 µmol⋅L-1) on leaves of hybrid poplar (Populus alba × Populus berolinensis) seedlings and examined morphoanatomical traits and physiological processes. Leaves of seedlings sprayed with single or mixed N solutions developed marginal necrosis, curling, and small cracks on the adaxial surface. The silicon (Si)-rich crystals were larger (about 100% increase in crystal diameter compared to untreated seedlings) on the adaxial leaf surface, with a significant positive correlation between the atomic percentage of N and Si on the crystal areas of the surface. Leaves were sensitive to NO2- compared with NO3- even at a low concentration; water content, dry mass, and photochemical variables significantly declined and dark respiration increased only in leaves treated with mixed N form. Mixed N foliar applications significantly increased leaf concentrations of the free amino acids Glu, Gln, and Asn and organic acids oxaloacetic acid and citric acid. Besides, mixed N treatment stimulated leaf transamination, as indicated by significant increases in Ala and Asp concentrations and activities of glutamic oxalacetic transaminase and glutamic pyruvic transaminase. However, mixed N applications led to declines in leaf concentrations of putrescine (by 65%, p = 0.01) and spermine (by 53%, p = 0.01). A higher proportion of NO2- (300 µmol⋅L-1) in mixed N solution was inhibitory to key N-metabolic enzymes and N translocation via the phloem. Our results showed that wet deposition of airborne N pollutants modified surface properties and induced additional detrimental effects related to N-compound foliar absorption. Furthermore, our findings indicate that detoxification of reactive N is apparently related to N assimilation and export from the treated leaves via the phloem.
